Family Safety Protocol Mindset
REMINDER: The Family Safety Protocol seminars are coming up this weekend! Here is a short video clip of the last seminar we held which includes a snip of lecture where we discuss Mindset. We talk about the denial mindset and why we need to replace denial with a correct mindset of “Readiness.”
To be Ready means to be Aware, Prepared, and Willing to protect yourself. The denial mindset is none of these things.
Upcoming Seminars are this weekend:
Saturday, December 11 from 11am – 2pm
Crossfit Oakland facilities
Sunday, December 12 from 11am – 2pm
Fort Mason Center – San Francisco

Fellow CFOers -
Lydia started some interest in holding a seminar-style class geared towards self-protection for women. I’d love the opportunity to share some of the knowledge I’ve gained through all my years of training with my friends at CFO.
Rather than limit the class to women, however, I thought I’d see if there was interest in opening up this class to both men and women. Contrary to other women’s “self defense” classes, I would show women the exact same material that I would show men. In fact, over the last month I have been involved with two separate training contracts that we ran for a federal law enforcement agency and a special operations group in the military (through Sayoc Tactical Group). Both of these contracts had women in attendance and we taught them the same material as the men, with a high level of success.
The original interest for this class came about from the thought of self protection. But many of us have families. Wives, husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends, children, etc. Self protection is incomplete without the rest of your family in the equation. While this is certainly not an exclusively “couples” training seminar, I think it would be a great opportunity for any interested couples to come in and train together. When protecting your family it is of the utmost importance to be on the same page regarding readiness. The lecture portion (the first 30 minutes) of this course, alone, will help lay the foundation for building a system of readiness to protect yourself and your family.

Do you know how to fight? Do even know you’re about to find yourself in a fight? Are you willing to do what is necessary to protect yourself or your loved one(s)? We’ll go into this in a good amount of detail.

2010 Sama Sama – Sayoc DVD Available
Following up with our last post, the 2010 Sama Sama Sayoc DVD is now available! I just received mine two days ago and this year’s DVD is a good one! It’s a three-volume, two-disc set that the most Sayoc Kali training material of any Sama Sama DVD I’ve seen to date. 3.5 hours!
I was honored to find out that yours truly has about a 4 min segment at the beginning of the DVD, talking about “Intent.” Intent is a very important part of your training, especially anytime you use drills (which everyone does) as a training tool. Tuhon Ricardo has a nice, long section on ground work and maneuverability, shot at night. Good stuff!
Buy the 2010 Sayoc Sama Sama DVD ->
This DVD is special for a reason other than the amount of content. Pamana Tuhon Sayoc, himself, is teaching material in this DVD. What’s great about this is that he is teaching the new practitioners our basic curriculum. 3 of 9, Panantukan, and Receiver grips. If you are a new practitioner, this is great, basic material to get a better understanding about how Sayoc Kali works. If you have been training for a while, this is even better! It’s like a back-stage pass to see the actual thought process behind what goes into these drills – the thought process of the head of the system!
The entire table of contents is on the Sayoc Kali main site, but a few areas of training covered are:
- Transition Drills
- Panantukan
- Receiver Grips
- Counters to drawing a blade
- Lowline kicking
- Stick “diggables”
- Application to the street
- Family Dynamics
Blade Drawing – Tuhon Tom Kier
Sayoc Kali just posted a new video regarding blade drawing on Youtube. It is a trailer for the upcoming Sayoc Sama Sama 2010 DVD. This short clip on blade drawing features Sayoc Tuhon Tom Kier lecturing just before a training session at Sama Sama. He discusses the importance of transitions – being able to draw your blade from a holstered position in an effective manner. This, Tuhon Tom describes, as one of the “key elements to being a high-level weapons practitioner.”
This mindset applies, of course, to ANY weapon. It is common to see firearms practitioners training thousands of reps on just the draw. Why wouldn’t you put the same emphasis on any other weapon with which you train?
Tuhon Tom Kier is the Director of Sayoc Tactical Group which focuses on the warrior mindset for military and law enforcement combatives.
New Weekend Schedule
We are moving the day and time of our weekend class. The weekend class will now be held on Saturdays and we are will be training earlier in the day.
The new schedule starts Saturday, August 15th 9am – 10:30am, which is our new class time. The weekday schedule remains the same.
See you then!
Tuhon Felix Cortes – Sipa Sikaran
Tuhon Felix Cortes just posted a Facebook video showing some sipa sikaran concepts. If you have not had the opportunity to see or train with Tuhon Felix, you should. His timing, speed, and training and teaching methodology are all top notch. On top of that, Tuhon Felix is an all around great guy to be around too. Check out the sipa sikaran video and be sure to “like” the Filipino Combatives Fan Site.
Also, did you know that there is also a Sayoc Kali FB Fan Site?
Joe Marana – Inland Empire FMA
We had a guest visit the gym last night. Joe Marana from Inland Empire FMA came up from Southern California to train with us last night. Joe is an Associate Instructor in Sayoc Kali, an Apprentice Instructor in Atienza Kali and has rank in Inosanto FMA and Doce Pares Eskrima. Joe started with the Sayoc LA school, run by Travis Downing and Joey Pena before starting up his own group.
It’s always good to train with people from other Sayoc groups to see how they move and how they interpret the material. Seeing variations from other instructors can help you put your own pieces of the puzzle together as you develop.
Last night, Joe helped us further develop some of the material based on Panantukan Set 1 that I learned at Sayoc Camp 505 this month.
Thanks for the visit, Joe!
